ChatGPT vs Claude vs Gemini: Which AI Assistant Fits Your Workflow?

Choose the workflow before judging the output

For editing an existing codebase and running tests, compare coding surfaces such as Codex and Claude Code. For work that depends on Google Drive files, check Gemini's connection requirements first. For generating images in a conversation, ChatGPT and Gemini offer starting points. This article has no evidence for naming a universal winner in prose quality or long-document analysis.

This is a comparison of ChatGPT, Claude, and Gemini assistant workflows, with public features and pricing checked on 2026-10-27. It uses official documentation for conditional choices, rather than a hands-on ranking of output quality or reliability. API model specifications, subscription model access, and file-upload limits are separate questions.

Subscription budget: access and usage matter

These are examples of individual monthly plans displayed in US dollars when checked. Regional taxes, promotions, and local currency prices can differ; confirm your region, account eligibility, and checkout price.

Assistant Free entry Example individual paid plans
ChatGPT Free Go $8/month, Plus $20/month; Pro at $100, $200, or $500/month
Claude Free Pro $20/month; Max from $100/month
Gemini Free Google Account Google AI Plus $4.99/month, AI Pro $19.99/month; Ultra also available

Sources: ChatGPT plans and limits, Claude pricing, and Gemini US subscriptions. Monthly fees do not translate into a fixed number of tasks: features, models, and limits depend on the plan. API billing is a separate comparison; see AI platform pricing.

For an existing subscription, identify whether the missing ingredient is a feature or more usage. A lower monthly price only helps if the plan covers both. Without a record of your workload, there is no basis for claiming that a high-tier subscription will necessarily cost less than API usage.

Writing: compare the editing workflow

ChatGPT's documentation distinguishes Chat for questions and discussion from Work for research, analysis, and deliverables such as documents. Claude lists file creation and Artifacts; Gemini lists Canvas in its free plan. These are different ways to draft and revise, but their availability does not establish which assistant writes more naturally or uses fewer clichés. See using ChatGPT, Claude features, and Gemini features.

Start with the deliverable: a paragraph, or a report, file, or page that you need to keep editing. Then try the same non-sensitive source draft, audience, and facts that must remain unchanged. Check preservation of numbers and qualifications, adherence to tone, and whether the result fits the next step in your workflow. This is a suggested evaluation method, with no predetermined winner.

Coding: explaining code and executing in a repository differ

A chat can be a starting point for explaining a function or discussing a design. For implementing a change and verifying it, compare surfaces that can read the repository, edit files, and run checks.

  • ChatGPT / Codex: The official quickstart covers desktop projects, the CLI, IDE extension, and Cloud environments. Choose according to where your code runs and how you review changes; an answer in ordinary Chat is not evidence that code ran in your repository. Codex quickstart.
  • Claude / Claude Code: Claude Code's documentation describes reading repositories, editing files, and running commands. Individual Pro and Max plans currently include Claude Code. This gives terminal-based work a concrete entry point, but does not establish more reliable refactoring. Claude Code developer tasks, plan access.
  • Gemini: The web assistant can import code folders and GitHub repositories for questions. That differs from making changes and running tests in your development environment. If execution is required, check the specific coding product and its permissions separately. Gemini file and code imports.

For a large refactor, inspect the diff, behavior constraints, and test results. Fitting a repository into context does not prove a correct change. We have no controlled code-quality comparison here, so there are no rankings for language support, framework freshness, or multi-file consistency. For team access boundaries, continue with Codex vs Claude Code rollout.

Long documents: check what the assistant can actually read

An API context window is a capacity constraint for a particular model request. It is not a promise about assistant uploads, PDF visual processing, or retrieval accuracy. For example, GPT-6 Astra's API specification lists a 1,050,000-token window and 128,000 maximum output tokens. Those figures do not belong in a column labeled “ChatGPT plan context.” GPT-6 Astra API specification. OpenAI also distinguishes Work / Codex from Chat in its assistant model documentation.

File handling may affect the choice before the headline context number does. Claude documents text and visual analysis for PDFs of up to 100 pages; PDFs of 101–1,000 pages are text-only, and files over 1,000 pages cannot be uploaded. If a long PDF's charts contain essential evidence, a successful upload is insufficient. Claude file limits.

Gemini supports documents, spreadsheets, images, and videos, including adding files from Drive. Work or school accounts may need Workspace administrator access, and Drive connections have account-setting requirements. Gemini file requirements. This is a relevant path to check for existing Drive materials; it does not prove better long-document recall.

For your own documents, prepare questions with known answers and questions that span pages. Request page references or original passages, then verify each answer. This can expose omissions; a single successful run cannot establish superior reliability.

Images and video: choose by input and deliverable

Task Choice supported by official capabilities
Generate or edit photos and illustrations in a conversation ChatGPT and Gemini offer image-generation surfaces; compare account access, limits, and actual samples
Create coded charts or interactive diagrams Claude offers HTML/SVG charts and interactive visuals in beta on web and desktop; these differ from photo or illustration generation
Upload a video and ask questions Gemini documents video uploads; check the file and account limits
Generate or edit video in the Gemini app The current video page describes Gemini Omni replacing Veo in the app; a Google AI subscription is required, with features varying by tier and geography, for ages 18+

Sources: ChatGPT image generation, Gemini image features, Claude's image and visual boundaries, Gemini video uploads, and Gemini Omni. The final row concerns the Gemini app; it does not establish the same change for the Veo API or Flow.

These are capability distinctions, without AIGCDev image or video comparison samples. Media support does not establish image quality, character consistency, or video-understanding accuracy rankings. See the AI image generation guide for a more focused selection process.

A practical selection order

First exclude surfaces that cannot meet your file, media, or execution requirements. Confirm regional availability and plan access. For the remaining assistants, choose a representative task and define the facts to preserve, acceptable format, and pass conditions before trying it. Record the output, revisions, and actual usage before deciding whether to upgrade.

For prose style, complex refactoring, or long-document recall, this article cannot name an evidence-backed universal winner. For repository execution, Drive access, or video generation, the documented capabilities and limits above can narrow the trial.
